Liverpool major pre-season hope is obvious despite injuries and mixed results

The phoney war is over and Jurgen Klopp might just be heading into the new Premier League season with mixed emotions from his busy summer.

On the one hand, Klopp has been able to see the bulk of his charges get some vital pre-season work under their belts ahead of another sapping campaign, particularly during the long days and double sessions in Austria prior to their return to Merseyside on Friday.

From the largely commercial-driven jaunts Thailand to Singapore across to the stamina-building opportunities near the Austrian mountains, it’s been a few weeks much more in-keeping with a traditional pre-season schedule of a club the size of Liverpool after a couple of improvised, pandemic-impacted itineraries over the last two years.

Klopp has finally added the Community Shield to his Anfield haul to complete the set in English football while also striking a psychological blow of sorts against the side who will once more rival his team for the league title this coming campaign in Manchester City.

Liverpool U21s suffer defeat

Liverpool under-21s suffered a 5-1 defeat to FC Porto’s B team on Sunday afternoon.

Barry Lewtas’ side were victorious when taking on Kidderminster Harriers last Friday at Aggborough Stadium, thanks to goals from Jake Cain, Leighton Clarkson and Oakley Canonier, but were well-beaten on this occasion.

Layton Stewart scored the Reds’ only goalscorer in Portugal.

Liverpool defender Nat Phillips transfer latest as Bournemouth consider fresh move

Bournemouth are considering reigniting their interest in Liverpool defender Nat Phillips after their manager Scott Parker questioned his centre-back options.

Phillips spent the second half of last season on loan at the Cherries and helped them win promotion back to the Premier League.

Liverpool had been anticipating an offer of a permanent transfer for the 25-year-old having set an asking price of between £12million and £15m, only for concrete interest from a number of interested parties to have not yet been forthcoming.

Virgil van Dijk has spotted recent Mohamed Salah change after Liverpool contract admission

Virgil van Dijk admits Mohamed Salah may have been affected by the discussion over his contract last season – but believes the Liverpool striker is again playing with “a free mind”.

Salah was in outstanding form in the Community Shield win over Manchester City on Saturday, scoring a penalty and having a hand in the Reds’ two other goals in a 3-1 triumph.

Having netted 27 goals by the end of February last season, the Egyptian scored only four times in Liverpool ‘s final 20 games after talk intensified over his Anfield future as he approached the final 12 months of his deal at the club.

Salah, though, ended the speculation by signing an extended contract at the start of July, and Van Dijk has already noticed a change in the winger’s performances.

Thiago hailed as Premier League’s ‘most gifted player’

Former Aston Villa and Chelsea forward Tony Cascarino has labelled Thiago as the ‘most gifted’ player to grace the Premier League.

The Liverpool midfielder was on top form on Saturday afternoon as Jurgen Klopp’s side got the better of Manchester City in the Community Shield and has been an inspired purchase by the Reds.

Such has been the impact of the former Bayern Munich man, Cascarino believes the Spainard ranks at the very top of individuals to operate in the top-flight when it comes to natural ability.

“Thiago’s an amazing footballer. There’s very few players who are so gifted. I would have him as probably the most gifted player I’ve seen in the Premier League – as in technique – he is extraordinary,” he told talkSPORT.

“We’ve all seen loads but Thiago is up there with the very best. Ever. Technically, he’s up there with the very best. Technically he has got everything. If he plays a lot of football, Liverpool will be close. If he has injuries, then Liverpool will suffer without Thiago in this team.”

Roberto Firmino breaks silence on Liverpool future amid Juventus transfer rumours

Roberto Firmino has insisted he wants to ‘stay’ at Liverpool after speculation of a move to Juventus during the summer transfer window. The forward has just one year left on his contract at Anfield.

The ECHO understands Liverpool have no appetite to sell Firmino – who has reportedly attracted a £19.5 million bid from the Serie A club. The Brazilian started in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Manchester City in Saturday’s Community Shield match.

Firmino is a much-loved member of the Liverpool squad and fans have expressed their desire for him to be offered a new contract to extend his seven year stay on Merseyside.

Darwin Nunez dilemma emerges and Fabio Carvalho decision made

Who to pick and who not to pick? That is the question ahead of today’s friendly vs Strasbourg.

Darwin dilemma for Klopp – Ian Doyle

The big question today is – will Darwin Nunez start for Liverpool?

After all the excitement of yesterday in the Community Shield, I’d be tempted to resist throwing the Uruguayan in from the off and instead introduce him at half-time.

Jurgen Klopp, though, will still be able to put out a reasonably strong side against Strasbourg for the friendly at Anfield.

None of the outfield starters against Manchester City should be involved, so intense was the game.

Needs must in goal, however, and Adrian can begin with Harvey Davies coming on at the interval.

Declan Rice doubles down on Thiago Alcantara opinion

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice has lauded Liverpool midfielder Thiago following their encounters in the Premier League.

The Hammers skipper has established himself as one of the best midfielders for England with Gareth Southgate entrusting him in the middle of the pitch. Rice has spoken highly of the 31-year-old, a player who was heavily criticised after arriving in the Premier League, as recently as April when Dietmar Hamann weighed in.

In a recent interview with Tubes on the Tubes & Ange Golf Life YouTube channel, the 23-year-old named Liverpool’s Spanish midfielder as one of the toughest midfielders he has played against in his career. He said: “There’s so many (good midfielders) I can’t even describe or pick out one.

Darwin Nunez left outraged as Liverpool supporters taunt Erling Haaland

Liverpool laid down an early marker for the new season with a rousing Community Shield victory over Manchester City on Saturday.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and new signing Darwin Nunez all notched as the Reds earned a 3-1 triumph. The result means Jurgen Klopp’s side have now won every domestic honour available to them during his tenure.

But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at the King Power Stadium.

‘He’s unlucky’

Former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha has criticised the decision to award Liverpool a penalty during the Community Shield.

Mohamed Salah’s cross was met by the head of Darwin Nunez and nodded back towards goal only for the Citizens’ defender to stop the effort with an outstretched arm. Referee Craig Pawson didn’t notice the incident initially and let play continue before VAR advised him to check the monitor.

At the time, the score was level after Julian Alvarez cancelled out Trent Alexander-Arnold’s first-half strike. The Egyptian King stepped up to fire Liverpool back in front but not after the incensed City players protested – with the culprit, Ruben Dias, booked for his complaints – before Nunez added a third in stoppage time.

Sounds like sour grapes to me…

Liverpool ‘eye Hakan Calhanoglu’ as one of three replacements

Jurgen Klopp could reportedly eye up a move for Hakan Calhanoglu, Adrien Rabiot or Ismael Bennacer, according to Calciomercato Web.

The Italian outlet reports that the German is an admirer of the Inter Milan playmaker. And the latest from Italy comes after the news of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s hamstring injury suggesting Klopp could delve into the market for a stop-gap addition.

There appears to be no solid interest from the report with the Juventus and AC Milan midfielders touted as players who could potentially be eyed.

‘Good luck’

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has wished Premier League challengers luck catching up with Liverpool and Manchester City after their Community Shield showdown.

The Reds ran out 3-1 winners thanks to goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez after Julian Alvarez levelled proceedings. Both Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola’s sides have been at the pinnacle of the Premier League table since the pair locked horns with their respective clubs.

As the two sides added to their firepower in recent years, the gap between the top two and trailing four teams has increased. Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United have all made signings during the summer in a bid to cut the gap but following the curtain raiser at the King Power Stadium, Keane doesn’t fancy their chances.

‘It’s the perfect start’

Trent Alexander-Arnold found the back of the net in yesterday’s win over Manchester City.

The full-back took greater pride in securing a Community Shield winners medal after missing out in three previous outings in the curtain raiser.

Speaking to ITV he said:

This one means a lot to be honest. It’s the third time we’ve been in it and we haven’t been able to win it so far. That was our motivation going into it, we worked hard in pre-season this was our aim. Ours started today so it was important to start off on the right foot.

It was on target that’s all I’ll say. I just tried to get a good connection, steer it towards goal, got a deflection – wasn’t too big – but I’m always happy to contribute to goals.

On Darwin Nunez

It’s got to be up there (with one of the best debuts). He won the pen, scored the goal, had a one-on-one. He looks lively, very lively, he’s someone who’s been brought into score goals and he’s proved he can do that today.

A top player, young player, you can tell he’s come in to learn, he’s bonded with the lads, everyone’s gone on well with him. He’s come in, worked hard, got his head down so far and knows his positions not just going to be there because we bought him this summer, he’s got to earn it and he’s come on with a point to prove and scored the goal to clinch it and won the pen also.

On the upcoming season

Who knows what’ll happen over the course of the season. What we’ll have to do is prepare as well as we have done this pre-season. Our aim is to be as fit as possible, push from the first kick of the season to the very last, like we did last year, and win as many trophies along the way. For us, it’s the perfect start but it’s a long season and we hope to win more along the way.

Liverpool ‘could be set to make move’ for the ‘next Neymar’

Liverpool could be set to make a move for 19-year-old Santos forward Marcos Leonardo, according to reports.

The Brazilian netted 15 goals in 39 appearances for his current club, last term. And according to Bolavip, Liverpool are expected to make an ‘official proposal’.

However, nothing specific has been disclosed as of yet.

Liverpool ‘confident of signing’ Jude Bellingham

Liverpool are said to be confident of signing Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham and could even have an agreement in place within weeks, according to reports.

That’s according to Football Insider, who are claiming that Liverpool are working on having an agreement in place and that could see Bellingham join as early as January of next year.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are one of the teams who continue to be linked with Bellingham and the ECHO understands the Reds are strong admirers of the youngster.

Ian Doyle verdict

New season, same old Liverpool. When, back in 2019, the Reds came up against Manchester City in the Community Shield, they went into the match with fans fretting after some disappointing warm-up performances and results.

While his team would eventually lose on penalties, Jurgen Klopp later admitted he had seen enough in their showing to know they would be fine for the campaign ahead. Liverpool going on to wrench the Premier League title from City’s grasp with a runaway success and end a 30-year wait to be crowned champions.

Nobody would be brave or foolish enough to forecast a repeat after the latest meeting between the two modern rivals. But Klopp will have once again taken significant encouragement from a raucous occasion even before the late drama that ensured the Reds boss completed a clean sweep of available domestic honours during his tenure.
